Oliguria is the term used to describe in the decreased of urine production. Sudden decreased in the production of urine can be a sign of dehydration, renal failure or urinary obstruction.
Types of Oliguria
* Pre-renal – due to dehydration, diarrhea, massive bleeding or sepsis
* Renal - due to kidney damage
* Post-renal – due to obstruction of the urine flow
Causes of Oliguria
Patients that undergo major surgery usually experiences decrease in urine output due to:
* Fluid or blood loss
* Response of adrenal cortex to stress
Common Causes of Oliguria
* Inadequate fluid intake
* Severe infection leading to shock
* Kidney inflammation or damage
* Total urinary tract obstruction – (e.g. enlarged prostate)
* Medications that harms the kidney (e.g. chemotherapy or immunosuppressant drugs)
Symptoms of Oliguria
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* High fever
* Dizziness
* Rapid pulse
* Lightheadedness
* Decrease in urine output
